A Lancashire school is leading the way in sustainable design with an eco-friendly extension.

Children from St John’s Southworth RC Primary School in Nelson, East Lancashire, have been learning about the natural and thermally efficient building materials which are being used to build their new classrooms. Youngsters from the Lomeshaye Road school swapped the classroom for the construction site to see for themselves how their new extension is coming along.

After having cut the sod, taken part in a health and safety briefing and designed their own safety posters for the Accrington-based construction company the children are now being introduced to the two main building components – thermal clay blocks and natural insulation in the form of sheep’s wool. Floor coverings will be composed of recycled carpets.

St John’s Southworth RC is an Eco School and pupils have been closely involved in the design of the building. The designer, Emma Palmer from Campbell Driver Partnership, has specified building materials which come from natural sources and is keen for the children to have an understanding of the construction process from beginning to end.

UK property developer Land Securities has revealed that its new shopping and leisure centre in the City of London is being heated and cooled by a novel geothermal system.

Underneath the financial district’s so-called One New Change shopping centre, 60km of pipework — enough to wrap around the London Eye 140 times — will warm and cool the building by transferring heat to and from the ground itself and two water wells 150m below the surface.

Semiconductor Giant Pushes Millions Into Solar, LED Arena

An interesting approach to conserving environment.
I think the time has come for all of us and businesses to follow. We cannot afford anymore such devastating ignorance eating our planet. Please, pull-up your heads off the sand, look around and make a move.

One of the biggest semiconductor manufacturers in the world, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, is pushing its chips into the middle in another field: solar power and LED manufacturing.

Hsinchu-based TSMC announced that along with plans for new semiconductor foundries, they will spend more than $100 million on a LED manufacturing line and $218 million on a thin film photovoltaic construction facility. This comes a year after the company announced their intentions to move into these green tech fields, and follows on the heels of a number of business moves aimed at centering them in the push for solar and LED fields. …
